Why Prague is the Perfect Place to Study Abroad

Why is prague the perfect place to study abroad? Well first off, we wouldn’t have this blog and our love for travel if it wasn’t for studying abroad in Prague.

When we first knew we wanted to go abroad, we always had our hearts set on Italy. There was no questioning it. We were going to have gelato for breakfast, pizza for lunch, pasta for dinner, and wine for dessert every day. We were going to live the Italian lifestyle that so many dream of.

This is until we heard about Prague. We had a friend who was studying in Prague at the time when we were deciding where to go, and she was begging us to consider Prague. For the longest time we were like, “no, no, we are going to Italy”. We finally agreed to at least look at it, just to rule it out, but when we did so we soon realized that Prague is the perfect place to study abroad.

We decided to say “ciao” to our dream of living the Italian life and “ahoj” to our new found love of sweet Praha. These reasons below are why Prague is the perfect place to study abroad.

It’s a fairytale city

What we mean by this is that the city feels magical like it’s straight out of a fairytale storybook, especially in the castle area. Everywhere you walk around this city you’ll see something cool. The architecture is gorgeous. Prague was never bombed during the wars, so all of the old and beautiful buildings have been untouched.

It’s cheap

If you have ever heard anyone who’s been to Prague say that the beer is cheaper than water, they’re not kidding. The beer is literally cheaper than water, and it’s so good. Meals in Prague are cheap as well if you go to places that aren’t touristy. You can get a good sized meal for $5. You can even get a large pizza for $5. It’s insane.

When we studied abroad in Europe it was actually cheaper for us to eat out rather than cook in since we were gone traveling so much that our groceries would spoil.

It’s poppin’

No matter what night of the week it is, there’s always something you can do. Prague has a booming nightlife, so if clubs are your thing, you’ll have a great time. If you’re more lowkey, Prague also has plenty of pub type bars and jazz bars that will give you a good time. There’s even cheap wine bars if you’re down for that.

Prague is such a lively city. The city does sleep but you can still find a good amount of people who are out til 4 AM. Whether you’re a rager or a chiller, Prague’s got places for you.

The Public transportation

Public transportation is a weird thing to geek out on but seriously Prague’s public transportation is so nice. It is cheap, easy to navigate, clean, and makes it easy to get around. It’s night and day compared to BART or the Subway. Another random but really nice thing is that the escalators down to the metro move fast. Slow escalators are like when you are walking behind someone who’s walking too slow and you can’t get around them. Prague’s escalators are efficient.

The size of the city

Prague is the perfect size. It’s in the goldilocks state, not too big but not too small. If you really wanted to you could walk to most places in less than 45 minutes. It’s cozy but it’s still got that city feel.

The parks

There are a lot of parks and greenery around Prague, which makes it feel like less of a city and more naturistic. These parks are great for grabbing a bottle of wine and cheese and picnicking. They’re great to go to to just get out and get some fresh air.

One of our favorite park areas is Letna. In the Letna park there is a beer garden that overlooks Prague and the Vltava river. It’s a happening place and is so fun to go to after school with some friends and hang out.

Even though the Vltava river isn’t technically a park, we had to include paddle boating somewhere in this article and this was the best category it would fit under. If you study abroad in Prague this is a MUST. Grab a bottle of wine, some good friends, and get out on a paddleboat for an hour around sunset and enjoy the beautiful view of the castle and the Charles Bridge.

Trdelniks

These were so yummy. You’ll see little places with these everywhere. They’re dough spiraled into a chimney shape with cinnamon and sugar on the outside. A trdelnik with Nutella is the best. If you choose to get one with soft serve like the one in the picture, make sure you are hungry because that thing is a meal.

The cafes

Prague has so many cute cafes, which are perfect for getting your school lwork done. We were always on the hunt to find the best one. We found so many good ones that we wrote a blog post on the 10 best coffee shops in Prague a little bit ago.

The markets

The markets change seasonally but they are always so fun to go to. In the fall, you can get free tastings of buchka, which is wine at its earliest stages. It’s only 3-4 percent and it tastes like juice which makes it dangerous. You’ll just keep drinking it and it’ll hit ya before you know it.

There are a lot of farmers markets scattered across the city which makes it nice to grab some produce on your way home from school. In October they get decorated with leaves and pumpkins for fall and it’s so festive.

Once the end of November hits, the Christmas markets come out. These are so festive and so fun to see! They switch over from buchka to gluhwein, which is hot wine. It’s delicious. A lot of new street food places come out during this time and it’s so good. You know how food trucks are for some reason really good in America? That’s what the food is like from these stands at the markets.

A final year round market that we adore is Manifesto Market. This place is so lively. It’s like a cute and trendy outdoor food court. They have all types of food and there are beer bars and wine bars. It’s all delicious and it’s a super cool place to meet up with your friends at!
